This Canadian Coast Guard Ship was named for Yukoner Martha L. Black. Martha was the indomitable wife of politician George Black, who rose to become Commissioner of Yukon and eventually Speaker of the House of Commons. In her own right, Martha became the second woman in Canadian history elected as a Member of Parliament in 1935. Initially posted to the Western Canadian Region, her namesake now plies the Saint Lawrence River and the Saguenay River in Quebec.
